NEET (UG) and JEE Main explained in one student-friendly place

This section is an easy-to-understand guide. Students must always verify final dates, eligibility, syllabus and counselling rules from the latest official NTA, MCC, JoSAA/CSAB and state counselling notifications.

Important: NEET rules can change year-wise. Use this page for guidance and always verify from the latest official Information Bulletin and public notices before application or counselling.

About NEET (UG) and Role of NTA

NEET (UG) is the common national entrance test for undergraduate medical education in India. It is used for admission routes including MBBS, BDS and other notified undergraduate health science courses. NTA conducts the examination, manages application, admit card, test administration, answer key challenge and result declaration. Counselling and seat allotment are handled separately by MCC/DGHS, state authorities and relevant admission bodies.

NEET (UG) Examination Scheme

NEET is generally conducted in pen-and-paper mode using an OMR sheet. The paper is based on Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students must follow the latest official bulletin for exact structure, marking scheme, languages and exam-day rules.

  • Subjects usually include Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Biology includes Botany and Zoology components.
  • Questions are objective type with answer marking on OMR.
  • Students should check current year question distribution and marking from the official bulletin.
  • Mode: Pen-and-paper / OMR based, unless notified otherwise.
  • Duration and timing are published by NTA in the official bulletin/admit card notice.
  • Question paper medium options are listed in the official bulletin; students should choose carefully during application.
  • NTA publishes city options and advance city intimation separately.
  • Final centre details are available on the admit card.
  • Students should not wait until the last day for travel planning.

Eligibility and Qualification

Eligibility for NEET includes academic qualification requirements, subject combinations, age/attempt-related conditions if applicable, nationality/category rules and course-specific admission rules. NRI, OCI and foreign national candidates should read the specific provisions in the official bulletin and relevant counselling authority rules.

  • Students must satisfy educational qualification requirements for the target course.
  • Class 12/equivalent subject requirements and minimum marks criteria depend on category and course rules.
  • Students appearing in qualifying examination should verify permitted status for that year.
  • These candidates should verify eligibility, documentation and counselling rules from official bulletin and admission authorities.
  • Different institutions may have additional document requirements.
  • NEET application usually requires selecting the correct qualifying examination code.
  • Wrong code selection can create document verification issues later.
  • Parabola counselling can help parents understand the correct category before form filling, but final confirmation must be from official rules.

Counselling, Reservation and Admission Routes

NEET score is used by different counselling authorities. Students must understand whether they are applying through All India Quota, state quota, deemed universities, central institutions or AYUSH counselling.

  • These routes are generally handled through MCC/DGHS or specified central authorities.
  • Students must check official counselling schedule, registration fee, choice filling, seat allotment and reporting instructions.
  • Seats other than All India Quota are generally handled by respective State/UT counselling authorities.
  • Domicile, category, local/non-local and document rules vary by state.
  • NEET is used for admission to notified AYUSH courses as per applicable authorities.
  • All India seats, state seats and private/deemed institution rules must be checked separately.
  • Category reservation, PwD/PwBD provisions, merit list and qualifying criteria are defined by official authorities.
  • Students should keep valid certificates ready before counselling.

Post-Examination Activities and Result

After the exam, NTA generally publishes candidate responses/OMR, provisional answer key, challenge window, final answer key and result/scorecard as per official schedule.

OMR / ResponsesDisplayed for verification/challenge as notified
Answer Key ChallengeProvisional key can usually be challenged within a defined window
Final ResultDeclared after final key process
